There’s something sacred about these early years of motherhood. The sticky hands, the sleepy snuggles, the way little ones look to you for everything—from comfort to healing.
In our home, we’ve tried to keep things simple and natural when it comes to wellness. Over the years, we’ve learned to reach for remedies that support the body rather than suppress it, that work with creation—not against it.
These are the things I’ve come to rely on. The little tools that live in my kitchen and my apothecary, always close by for those everyday sniffles, bumps, and boo-boos.
Whether you’re new to natural living or already knee-deep in elderberry syrup and salves, I hope this gives you some gentle inspiration.
Homeopathy: Gentle Yet Powerful
We use homeopathy daily in our home—it’s our first line of defense when something’s off. What I love about it is how safe and effective it is for little ones, even newborns. Here are a few of our must-haves:
Arnica Montana
Perfect for bumps, bruises, falls, or general trauma. If there’s swelling or soreness, Arnica is our go-to. We keep it in the car and in our medicine basket.
Chamomilla
For teething babies who are fussy, clingy, or angry. This one has saved our nights more than once.
Aconitum Napellus
Great at the very first sign of illness—especially if your little one seems to come down with something suddenly after being outside in cold wind.
Belladonna
When there’s a high fever that comes on fast, especially if cheeks are flushed and the child is restless. It works beautifully and gently supports the body.
Pulsatilla
For clingy, weepy little ones who need extra cuddles during illness. It’s especially helpful with earaches or colds with thick yellow mucus.
We typically use pellet remedies from Ollois or liquid ones from RMDY Collective (use code: MARRA1O at checkout for 10% off your order), depending on what’s needed in the moment.
Herbal Favorites for Everyday Ailments
These are the remedies I keep stocked in our home year-round—trusted, well-loved, and used often, especially in the little years. They help us stay ahead of illness and support healing when something does pop up.
Elderberry Syrup + Tinctures/Glycerites
These are non-negotiables during cold and flu season—and honestly, we use them almost daily for immune support. Elderberry is our go-to when anything is going around.
Chamomile
This is one of my favorite herbs for the little years. We brew it into tea when bellies are upset or bedtime feels too big. I also freeze it into popsicles for teething, fevers, or just an afternoon reset when emotions are running high. It’s gentle, safe, and so soothing.
Calendula Salve
This lives in our car, on the bathroom shelf, and always near the door. Scrapes, bug bites, rashes, dry skin—calendula handles it all.
Mineral Tea
Made with nourishing herbs like nettle, red raspberry leaf, alfalfa, and oatstraw, this is a quiet support that works in the background. It helps strengthen the body over time—especially when growth spurts or exhaustion hit. Sometimes I add a bit of raw honey to increase the medicinal benefits.
Mushroom Tonic
We use this for deep immune support. Reishi, Turkey Tail, Chaga, Lion’s mane—these mushrooms are packed with properties that build up the immune system from the inside out.
Essential Oils—Used Sparingly and Wisely
I don’t use essential oils for internal use with littles, but we do diffuse or dilute topically when needed:
Lavender for calming and sleep
Thieves for immune support
Tea Tree (very diluted) for minor skin issues
Always remember to dilute essential oils properly and avoid using strong oils on babies under 6 months. Less is more with the littlest bodies.
Tools That Support Our Natural Lifestyle
We don’t just rely on herbs—we also use a few wellness tools that help the body do what it was made to do: heal, rest, and restore.
Portable Red Light Machine
We use this for everything from boosting immunity to helping with muscle soreness or calming an overstimulated nervous system. A few minutes a day is all it takes, and the benefits have been so worth it.
Air Doctor
Clean air matters more than we think, especially in the thick of winter when windows stay closed and germs float around. Our Air Doctor purifier runs 24/7.
Nebulizer (Saline + Colloidal Silver)
This is a wonderful tool when coughs or respiratory bugs show up. We use plain saline or, if needed, colloidal silver. It’s gentle but effective, especially when used early on.
Detox Baths
A warm detox bath helps little bodies release what they don’t need. We do this during illness or even when moods are heavy and off.
Facial Steamer
For stuffy noses and tight chests, the facial steamer is a lifesaver. It helps open up airways and brings so much comfort when they’re feeling congested.
Walking Through Illness with Peace
One of the biggest shifts we’ve made as a family is not fearing illness. The little years come with a lot of immune-building moments—runny noses, fevers, tummy bugs. And while they’re never fun, they’re often necessary.
We try not to panic, but to pray, pause, and proceed with wisdom. We support the body gently, trust in God’s design, and lean on the remedies that help the most.
Final Thoughts from a Mama in the Thick of It
If you’re reading this in the middle of a hard week—with coughs, tears, and restless nights—know this:
You’re doing wonderful.
You’re learning.
You’re not alone.
Natural living isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about doing the best you can with what you have.
And in this season, that’s more than enough.
