There’s a quiet beauty in living seasonally—a way of aligning our lives with the rhythms of nature that feels both grounding and intentional. As the seasons shift, they invite us to slow down, take notice, and embrace the unique gifts each time of year brings.
For our family, living seasonally has become a way of connecting, not just to the land, but to God’s perfect design for rest, renewal, and growth.
Finding Joy in Seasonal Rhythms
Each season offers its own blessings and opportunities for reflection. Spring reminds us of renewal and new life as wildflowers bloom and longer days call us outside. Summer brings an energy and abundance that encourages hard work and play. Autumn invites us to gather and prepare, while winter teaches us to rest and reflect.
Living seasonally doesn’t require a perfect homestead or a life without busyness. It’s more about being present and letting the rhythms of creation guide our choices, whether that’s what we eat, how we spend our time, or the traditions we cherish.
Eating and Living With the Seasons
One simple way to live seasonally is through food. We don’t yet have our own garden, but we love helping with Mimi’s and choosing what’s fresh and local. From juicy berries in the summer to hearty soups in the winter, seasonal eating not only nourishes our bodies but also keeps us connected to what God is providing in each season.
Beyond food, we try to let the seasons inspire our home and activities. Spring might bring wildflower picking and making herbal tinctures, while winter encourages warm teas and slower mornings.
Seasonal Herbs and Remedies
As someone passionate about herbalism, I’ve found that living seasonally also means leaning into the herbs and remedies God provides in each time of year. Spring’s wild greens are perfect for fresh teas, while summer calls for cooling herbs like peppermint. Autumn is all about immune-boosting herbs such as elderberry or echinacea, and winter brings warming spices and comfort from chamomile or ginger.
By listening to what each season offers, we can nourish both body and soul.
Lessons From Creation
One of my favorite things about living seasonally is how it reminds us of God’s presence. The changing seasons reflect His wisdom and care, offering us lessons in patience, preparation, and trust. Just as the land rests in winter and blooms again in spring, He calls us to times of quiet and renewal, knowing there’s a season for everything.
Celebrating the New Seasons With a Heart for God
In our family, the arrival of a new season is more than just a change in weather—it’s an opportunity to pause, reflect, and celebrate God’s handiwork. Each season is a new chapter, and we honor that by marking these transitions in meaningful, faith-centered ways.
- Winter: As the world quiets, we gather around a crackling fire, savor nourishing meals, and engage in deep, heartfelt conversations. It’s a time to rest and reflect on the peace of Christ, preparing our hearts for the promises of the coming year.
- Spring: For us, this season symbolizes new beginnings. While many set resolutions in January, I wait until spring to align my intentions with the natural rhythm of renewal. It’s also a time to host garden and tea parties, inviting our friends to come together and celebrate God’s gift of growth and connection.
- Summer Solstice: Summer invites us outside, into the warmth of His creation. From tending to the land to enjoying the sun’s embrace, we use this time to soak in the abundance of life and to express gratitude for the vibrant energy of the season.
- Autumn: As the leaves begin to fall, we slow down and prepare for what’s to come. It’s a season of gratitude, where we pause to reflect on God’s provision and ready ourselves for the quieter days ahead. Baking bread, sharing meals, and spending intentional time with family are just a few ways we embrace the spirit of autumn.
These seasonal celebrations, though simple, are rich with meaning. They help us pause, recognize God’s work in every changing moment, and stay aligned with the rhythm He’s set for creation.
