When I started exploring herbalism, I thought I was simply learning how to care for my family naturally. But what I didn’t expect was how deeply it would connect me to God and His creation. Each herb, with its unique purpose and design, feels like a quiet reminder of His love and provision.
Herbalism isn’t just about healing physical ailments; it’s a way of drawing closer to the Creator. Every plant holds a story of His care, and using them with intention feels like partnering with Him in the sacred work of nurturing and healing.
Finding God in the Details
One of the most humbling parts of working with herbs is realizing how perfectly they’ve been designed. Take Calendula, for example—a remedy my family uses often. Its ability to ease pain and inflammation is no accident. It feels like a gift from a Father who anticipated our needs long before we were here.
Psalm 104:14 says, “He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man; that he may bring forth food out of the earth” This verse reminds me that God’s hand is in every seed, leaf, and root. Whether I’m brewing a cup of chamomile tea or preparing a salve for Samson’s scraped knee, I’m reminded that He has already provided everything we need for healing.
Connecting Through Creation
Practicing herbalism has also deepened my relationship with the land. Tending to the garden, I’ve learned to see plants not just as tools, but as part of an interconnected system. Watching Samson gather herbs with me makes me realize how much this knowledge will shape his understanding of stewardship.
By working with the earth, I’m reminded of Genesis 2:15, where God calls us to “work it and take care of it.” For me, herbalism is a way of fulfilling that call—not only using plants for their benefits but respecting the soil, seasons, and balance that sustain them.
Faith in Action: Using Herbs with Intention
Herbalism isn’t just about knowing which plant helps with what ailment; it’s about approaching it prayerfully. Before I use an herb or share a remedy with someone, I often pause to thank God for it. That moment of gratitude transforms a simple act of care into an act of worship.
For example, when Samson catches a cold, I might make a batch of elderberry syrup. But as I prepare it, I also ask God to guide my hands and bless the preparation. It’s a small but meaningful way to acknowledge Him as the ultimate healer.
Lessons from the Garden
While I dream of having my own garden one day, helping in Mimi’s has already taught me so much. Gardening, like faith, requires patience and trust. You plant a seed, water it, and wait, often with no guarantee of success. But then, one day, a tiny sprout breaks through the soil—a reminder that growth is happening, even when we can’t see it.
That process mirrors so much of what it means to walk with God. Sometimes, we feel like we’re waiting forever for answers, healing, or clarity. But He is always at work, growing something beautiful in His perfect timing.
Healing for Body and Soul
Herbalism has taught me that healing is never just physical. When I use herbs, I’m reminded to slow down, be present, and care for my family with intention. That act of slowing down creates space for prayer and reflection, which brings healing to my soul as well.
It’s also a way of teaching Samson about the beauty and provision of God’s creation. When he learns that a simple leaf or seed can soothe a sting or calm an upset tummy, he’s seeing firsthand the creativity and care of the Creator.
A Call to Stewardship
As we build our house and plan our homestead, I can’t help but feel excited about the role herbalism will play. Whether it’s growing our own herbs, crafting remedies, or simply walking the land to see what’s already growing wild, I know this journey will continue to deepen my connection to God, my family, and the earth.
Being a community herbalist through my business, Balance and Bloom, has also shown me the importance of sharing this stewardship with others. Helping friends and neighbors find natural solutions to support their health feels like an extension of my calling. It’s a reminder that the knowledge and gifts God has given us aren’t just for ourselves—they’re meant to be shared in service to others. This work is an opportunity to not only bring healing, but to also inspire others to see God’s love and provision in the plants growing all around us.
Herbalism isn’t just a practice; it’s a lifestyle of stewardship, faith, and healing. It’s a way of saying, “Lord, I trust You to provide for every need,” and then watching as He does, again and again.
An Invitation to Grow
Whether you’re already using herbs or just starting to explore their benefits, I encourage you to approach them with wonder. Take a moment to notice the details of a plant’s design, to thank God for His provision, and to use them with care and intention. When we grow in our knowledge of creation, we also grow in our understanding of the Creator.
How has God’s creation spoken to you lately? Let’s grow together—in faith, in healing, and in gratitude for the beautiful world He’s given us.
